Also on the program is Dvořák's Hussite Overture, depicting his Czech homeland and the 15th-century Hussite wars, which includes deeply patriotic Czech songs.

    RUSSIAN SPRING

    3 Performances!

Orchestral music from Russia has long been among classical music’s most celebrated repertoire. CGOA’s Gorge Sinfonietta explores three seminal Russian composers through works beyond their most famous pieces.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture moves from the Orthodox church into the light, showcasing his brilliant orchestral colors. Shostakovich’s October packs the intensity and grandeur of his symphonies into a 15-minute tone poem. And Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 unfolds from its opening horn solo with the drama and beauty that made him a cornerstone of classical music.

  • STORYTELLING by CGOA's Gorge Sinfonietta

    STORYTELLING

CGOA’s Gorge Sinfonietta closes its season with a program rich in character and storytelling, featuring three distinctive works. At the heart of the program is Maria Schneider’s Carlos Drummond de Andrade Stories, written for soprano Dawn Upshaw and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Inspired by the poetry of Brazilian writer Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Schneider’s evocative and wistful composition brings his words vividly to life through music and voice. Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite captures the spirit of the American West with cowboy tunes, fiesta dance rhythms, and sweeping orchestral passages. Completing the program is William Grant Still’s Wood Notes, an atmospheric suite inspired by the poetry of J. Mitchell Pilcher and the landscapes of the American South.
